TMIP Mission: Support and empower planning agencies; through leadership, innovation and support of planning analysis improvements; to provide better information to support transportation and planning decisions.

TMIP Goals:
  • To help planning agencies build their institutional capacity to develop and deliver travel related information to support transportation and planning decisions.
  • To develop and improve analytical methods that respond to the needs of planning and environmental decision making processes.
  • To develop mechanisms to ensure the quality of technical analysis used to support decision-making and to meet local, state, and federal program requirements.
How to access services: The most current documents, training opportunities and other TMIP services can be accessed through the TMIP Web site: http://tmip.fhwa.dot.gov

Technical Assistance: Travel Model Improvement Program (TMIP) offers limited individual technical assistance, available by contacting the TMIP staff. The Virtual Mentoring and Technical Support Center (VMTSC) represents an effort by TMIP to expand the reach of the mentoring program by offering biweekly one-hour online virtual office sessions via the TMIP Web conferencing system. For office hours, please visit TMIP Web site http://tmip.fhwa.dot.gov.

Seminars and Training: TMIP develops and delivers seminars and training on a variety of topics. TMIP also sponsors regular on-line Web Knowledge and Information Exchanges on topics of interest to the modeling and simulation community. Typically held monthly, these webinars provide a great opportunity to stay current on all aspects of analysis, modeling and simulation issues.

Peer Review Program: Planning agencies can use peer reviews to ensure that technical processes they are applying or developing meet the agency's needs, and/or the standards of professional practice. Peer reviews of travel forecasting and data collection procedures are crucial to planning agency model development and improvement efforts. TMIP supports peer reviews by assisting agencies in panel assembly, logistics and funding for travel. For more information, please go to TMIP Web site http://tmip.fhwa.dot.gov.

E-mail List: The TMIP E-mail discussion list has about 1,100 travel-forecasting professionals from around the globe. To subscribe to any of the TMIP e-mail lists, go to the TMIP Web site http://tmip.fhwa.dot.gov.

TRANSIMS: TRANSIMS is a suite of travel modeling and microsimulation tools which provides for the simulation of the movement of individuals and vehicles on a second by second basis throughout the day. For more information, go to the TMIP Web site http://tmip.fhwa.dot.gov and follow the TRANSIMS link.

Other Services: Other various services include Peer Exchanges, Research, Technical Roundtables and Clearinghouse. For details, please go to http://tmip.fhwa.dot.gov.

Testimonials:

“I like TMIP because:
  1. Addresses items that are currently relevant and in many cases, vexing to all of us
  2. Holds webinars to expand the knowledge base - these are convenient and easy to attend.
  3. Allows smaller organizations to be aware and become familiar with the more cutting edge issues as they are addressed by the entities with greater capacity to be the initiators and early adopters/developers."
--- Susan G. Payne, Senior Planner, Central Lane Metropolitan Planning Organization, Lane Council of Governments
“TMIP is an excellent forum to discuss key modelling questions and jointly develop answers based on theoretical considerations and, perhaps more importantly, experience from top practitioners in the field of transport demand modelling. It is, in this sense, unique.”
--- Luis Willumsen, Director, Steer Davies Gleave, London
“The webinars have been very helpful. I have arranged to use a training room with a large screen projector to share the webinar with my work team. We can then discuss what we have seen. It is also good to archive them so we can retrieve them later for those that cannot attend. I have also found the clearinghouse very helpful. Even with Google it can be hard to find examples of current practice. Maybe we will be able to contribute one day soon. Sharing information is tremendously helpful. It can feel very lonely trying to build models without benefit of the experience of others.”
--- Joseph Huegy, AICP; Program Manager; Triangle Regional Model Service Bureau; the Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE)
